Come and discover the colours and reflections of the Kimberley –

With Artist Wyn Vogel and ‘On The Verandah’ Art Tours

– 7 to 13 August 2024 –

Wyn says ……..’As an Artist and one to love exploring – I have been wanting to visit the Kimberley for many moons!’

For this trip we are consolidating the experience of our Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale – to include, in the interim lay year – our ‘Remote and Rural’ Travel and Painting Trip, building on our experience in 2021 travelling to the Southern Grampians (Dunkeld Victoria) and painting together in the Kimberley as we did last year, in Dunkeld.

Wyn is an experienced Tutor (her Bio summary: https://www.fishlanestudios.com/wyn-vogel-2/ ) and will be Workshopping each day with you.

Beginners are welcome – you will be able to understand Wyn’s techniques and adapt her style of Work to suit your own brushes. Experienced Artists are always welcome, we would love you to be part of the Workshops and share some of your insights as we go to add to the learnings and experience of the day – we value your experience as part of the group!

This new opportunity takes us even further afield to travel to remote parts of Australia and experience the beauty of our ‘Aussie’ colours, shapes and patterns.

  • Selected Works from this ‘Field Trip’ will be accepted to be part of the ‘Adjunct’ Exhibition along with our ’32 Best in Muster’  Exhibition in Cairn at our Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale – 2025 in September to October 2025!

The goal for this year is to paint early in the morning, during the day – and take inspiration under the stars – absorbing the atmosphere of the Kimberley Station, which has already been home to some of our most amazing digital/film artists with the production of the movie ‘Australia’ in 2007 by Baz Luhrmann – an epic adventure drama film written by Luhrmann and screenwriter Stuart Beattie, with Ronald Harwood and Richard Flanagan…….directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman!

We will fly into Kununurra from Darwin and be picked up by 4 wheel drive – this is a fascinating and colourful part of Australian – so pack you paints and we will explore and share ideas and discover techniques as we go!

What more can we ask – our senses are already teased and stimulated – but where will we take it with our Art for this August 2024?

Wyn’s artwork is know for the unusual way she works – allowing the free flow of pigment and water across her paper – letting the chemical reaction of her pigments take shape on the paper without premixing on her palette.

What Art Materials to bring:

  • As much paper as you can carry – at least 300gsm in thickness – cold pressed – Wyn works on Arches 300gsm cold pressed medium grain.

Bring a pad of the paper or sheets, whichever you prefer – make the pad at least A3 and or break your sheets of paper into half sheet size to carry easily in you suitcase……..we are painting for 6 days or so – which means you will use a fair amount of paper.

  • Please bring a water container.

Wyn’s go to colours are:

Watercolour Paint Tubes (rather than pans) and/or Watercolour Pencils

  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Indigo
  • Cadmium Yellow – Deep
  • Phthalo Blue
  • Raw Sienna
  • Quinacridone Gold
  • Australian Red Gold
  • Alizarin Crimson – or similar colours

Also:

  • Black Waterproof Pigment Ink – bottle
  • A nib pen to work your ink onto the paper

Brushes – at least those below –

But please bring whatever you have in your kit – this is 6 days and you are welcome to share ideas and experiment with materials you have always wanted to try – but at least these below – if you have any problems sourcing these items you are welcome to head to myOnLine Shop to purchase ahead and I can send them to you:

  • 1 x 1/2 inch Angle shaper if you are planning to do any botanical painting!

Each brush below – one or more will help you:

  • 2 x wide wash brush 2″ are good – for wet work, and
  • 1 or 2 x wide wash brush 2″ or 3″ even – soft Goat Hair recommended – for dry work
  • 1 or 2 x Squirrel Needle point or Chinese style calligraphy brush for detailed line work and layering of your colours

Other Tools:

  • 1 x old kitchen spray bottle – washed out and ready to have clean water to spray across your paints – I recommend an old ‘Windex’ Bottle of similar to give you a good spray of water.
  • a 2B pencil and if you would like a rubber
  • We won’t worry about a hair dryer – we’ll let the wind do the job, but you will need a
  • But you will need a Backing Board to tape your art papers down (core board or similar from Bunnings cut to fit into your suitcase – if you make this smaller than the ½ sheet – 56 x 38cm size paper you will have to cut your paper down to fit your backing board) and
  • Tape to manage your paper – we don’t use an easel we tape the paper to the backing board so we can move the paper and tilt or turn as needed to manage your paint and water.
  • A roll of Paper towel is a handy addition to bring if you can fit it into your bag!
